A C-15 contractor prepares floors and installs coverings on them: carpet, sheet vinyl, resilient tile, wood floors and other materials sold as flooring. Sanding, refinishing and repairing wood floors are included.
Ceramic tile is the main exception. The CSLB description leaves it out, so a tiled floor goes to a tile contractor. Laminate, luxury vinyl plank and engineered wood stay with C-15.
Typical work under C-15
- Hardwood installation, sanding and refinishing
- Luxury vinyl plank and laminate
- Carpet and pad
- Sheet vinyl and resilient tile
- Subfloor leveling and surface prep for new flooring
Work that needs a different license
- Ceramic, porcelain or stone tile floors: C-54 Ceramic and Mosaic Tile
- Replacing a rotted subfloor: C-5 Framing
- Removing old vinyl flooring that contains asbestos: C-22 Asbestos Abatement
Tips before hiring
- Ask whether removing and hauling away the old flooring is in the price.
- For wood or vinyl over concrete, ask whether the crew will test the slab for moisture first.
- Get the product name, color and warranty in the contract so the right material arrives.
- Ask how furniture and appliances will be moved, and whether baseboards come off or get shoe molding.
