Glazing contractors select, cut, assemble and install glass, mirrors and glass-substitute materials. The class also covers fabricating and glazing frames, panels, sashes and doors. CSLB moved old D-25 Mirrors and Fixed Glass work here.

Homeowners hire C-17 contractors for window replacement, shower enclosures, sliding glass doors and wall mirrors. Storefronts and curtain walls on commercial buildings are the larger end of the trade.

Typical work under C-17

• Replacement windows
• Frameless and framed shower enclosures
• Sliding and hinged glass doors
• Wall mirrors and mirrored closet doors
• Commercial storefront glass
• Glass railings and panels

Work that needs a different license

• Shutters, blinds or window film: C-61/D-52 Window Coverings
• Cutting a new window opening in a bearing wall: B General Building
• Skylight flashing on the roof: C-39 Roofing

Tips before hiring

• Ask whether the bid is for full-frame replacement or insert windows. The two differ a lot in cost and in how much trim gets disturbed.
• For a shower door, ask for the glass thickness and whether it is tempered.
• Get the window brand, model and energy ratings written into the contract.
• Ask how the old window frames and glass will be removed and disposed of.
