C-7 covers communication and low-voltage systems that are energy-limited and run at no more than 91 volts. Think phone lines, network cabling, sound systems, cable TV, security cameras, satellite dishes, temperature controls and low-voltage outdoor lighting.
One carve-out matters for homeowners: low-voltage fire alarm systems are not part of C-7. The CSLB description excludes them by name. For higher-voltage wiring, such as a new circuit for a home office, you need a C-10 electrical contractor.
Typical work under C-7
- Ethernet and structured network cabling
- Whole-home audio and home-theater wiring
- Security camera systems
- Satellite dishes and cable TV wiring
- Thermostat and temperature-control wiring
- Low-voltage garden and path lighting
Work that needs a different license
- Fire alarm systems: C-10 Electrical
- New 120-volt or 240-volt outlets and circuits: C-10 Electrical
- Electronic door locks and access control: C-28 Lock and Security Equipment
Tips before hiring
- If the installer also wants to add an outlet for the equipment, ask who holds the C-10 for that part.
- For cameras, ask where footage is stored and who keeps the admin password once the job is done.
- Ask for a labeled cable map at the end, so the next installer can trace each run.
