What "EMP/WK Bnd Susp" means on a California contractor license

Updated November 1, 2026 · Primary status

CSLB's license page wording: "License is under Employee/Worker Bond Suspension."

Suspended because the LLC's required $100,000 employee/worker bond is missing from CSLB's records.

Limited liability companies carry an extra requirement. On top of the standard $25,000 contractor's bond, an LLC licensee must file a $100,000 employee/worker bond under B&P Code §7071.6.5. That bond protects the wages and benefits of the people the LLC employs.

CSLB's page for this status says: "License is under Employee/Worker Bond Suspension." The license we sampled belonged to an LLC, which fits the statute.

Without this bond on file, the license is not valid for contracting. A missing worker bond doesn't tell you anything about the work itself, but it does mean the LLC hasn't met a basic condition of holding its license.

What to do if a contractor you're considering shows this status

  1. Don't sign with this LLC until the suspension clears on CSLB's page.
  2. Ask for the bond number and the surety's name, then call the surety to confirm.
  3. While you're on the license page, check the $25,000 contractor's bond and liability insurance as well.
  4. Look the license up again before paying a deposit, since a filed bond changes the status.
