What "Pending IFS" means on a California contractor license

Updated November 1, 2026 · Secondary (additional) status

CSLB's license page wording: "The license may be suspended at a future date if the qualifying person is not replaced by [date]."

The qualifying individual has left, and the license faces suspension if a replacement is not in place by the date CSLB shows.

The person whose qualifications back this license has left the business. Under B&P Code §7068.2, the licensee has 90 days to replace them. This flag means that clock is running. CSLB's page states the deadline; in the sample we checked, it read: "The license may be suspended at a future date if the qualifying person is not replaced by 01/03/2027." The date differs from license to license.

For now, the license is still usable. If the deadline passes without a new qualifier, the license is suspended automatically or the classification is removed, and the record moves to suspended for no qualifier.

CSLB doesn't expand the "IFS" abbreviation in the data file code. The meaning comes from the license page wording.

What to do if a contractor you're considering shows this status

  1. Note the deadline on CSLB's license page and compare it with your project schedule.
  2. Ask the contractor who the new qualifier will be and whether the paperwork is filed.
  3. For a job that runs past the deadline, confirm a qualifier is approved before signing.
